Kalibo
Kalibo is well renowned for its Ati-Atihan festival normally held during the 3rd Sunday of January. It's the capital of Aklan province on Panay island. It's situated only a short distance away from the famous Boracay island. Kalibo is about a 2 hour drive from the port at Caticlan, where boats depart to get to the small island of Boracay (there is no airport on Boracay). The term Kalibo comes from the Aklanon word “sangka libo”, (”one thousand”), the number of native (Ati aka aeta) people who attended the first Catholic Mass there. Kalibo is known for the production of pineapple fiber, which is woven into cloth, called pina, a fabric used for the barong tagalog or long sleeved shirt with collar. Aklan is also rich in mineral resources such as chromite, manganese, and gold, but the claims have not been developed. Kalibo is 2-hr by bus from the pier. Caticlan is 5-min by tricycle from the pier. Kalibo is an hour and half travel to Caticlan jetty port or Tambisaan pier, depending on the season of they year. Upon reaching Caticlan or Tambisaan, your off by boat to the Boracay boat station of your choice. Kalibo is also accessible via the Roll on, Roll off (RORO) transport from various points of the country.
