Tagaytay
Considered to be the second summer
capital of the Philippines, next to Baguio. Less than 2 hours away from
Manila, Tagaytay is the perfect place for a quick weekend getaway. 700
meters above sea level and adjacent to bodies of water like Taal lake,
Tagaytay has cool climate almost all year round. On cooler months one
could literally have a walk in the clouds.
Sonyas Garden in Tagaytay is one of the more popular destinations. It used to be just a restaurant specializing in healthy, organic garden grown vegetables. Now with more services available such as a Bed and Breakfast inn, Full body massages and a beautiful flower garden, it has grown to be one of the most popular attractions in Tagaytay despite its distance from Tagaytay proper (maybe an extra 10 to 20 minute drive).
The boat ride to Taal Volcano also provides a unique experience. Driving along the main road of Tagaytay, one could see people with signs that read “Boat ride to Taal” – at first you would feel apprehensive stopping at these people carrying crude signs, but the boat ride is sure worth it. Don’t forget to haggle – price rages vary and you could always bargain for a much lower price than their initial offer. The guide will accompany you down to the shore – maybe a 15 minute drive from which your party would load a boat (banka) that would take you across the lake. On Taal itself, you would have to climb up to the mouth of the volcano. You could either hike up or go on horseback. A word of advise – go horseback. It’s a long way up and some portions maybe difficult to navigate on foot. Once you reach the top you can see the insides of Taal Volcano. Don’t expect flowing lava though. Just go up there and see for yourself.
