One huge misconception about Davao City planted in the minds of other Filipinos living in Luzon and Visayas is that the city is just a semi-urbanized town with little to no modern luxuries. In fact, the Traveling Nomad told one story of a Manila resident asking him if we have malls in the city in his post about the 7 Misconceptions about Davao City.
The Big Davao Fun Sale is about to change all that. Slated to be the Country’s Biggest Shopping Festival, Davao City is following in the footsteps of more developed cities like Singapore and New York City. The event is expected to be a version (albeit a smaller one) of the Great Singapore Sale and Black Friday Sale. Now the entire Philippines will know, once and for all, that Davao City has malls and they’re about to treat us all with huge discounts for a whole month!
The shopping festival will coincide with Araw ng Dabaw, the city’s charter anniversary held every March 16th. With so many events scheduled for the entire month, you’ll surely have every excuse to travel to Davao City anytime between March 14 and April 16.
The city’s biggest retail centers are giving as much as 80% off a wide selection of merchandise. Shopaholics will certainly be coming in hoards to Davao City for this event. Here are the Davao malls participating in the Big Davao Fun Sale:
Abreeza Ayala Mall – one of the newest upscale shopping centers in Davao City located along J.P. Laurel Avenue. This Ayala Mall boasts of popular international retail brands like Gap, Gap Kids, Mango, Debenhams, Dorothy Perkins and Payless Shoe Source among others. The mall also has a Robinson’s Department Store, Appliance Center and Supermarket. There are also cinemas, a good number of restaurants, coffee shops, specialty stores and a gaming center within the mall.
Gaisano South Mall – one of the oldest malls in Davao City. It is already an institution when it comes to retail for most locals. The mall is not as large and beautifully structured as the newer malls in the city but it has a wide selection of affordable merchandise. This mall is located in downtown Davao, a walking distance from City Hall, San Pedro Church, People’s Park and plenty of restaurants, hotels and entertainment centers.
Gaisano Mall of Toril – a recent addition to Davao City malls located in the southern parts. The mall is less than a year old and is situated in a quiet neighborhood in Toril, about 30-45 minutes from downtown Davao (depending on traffic conditions). Gaisano Mall of Toril’s two levels house a department store, a supermarket, a food court and parking spaces for shoppers.
Gaisano Mall of Davao – one of the largest and most popular malls in the heart of Davao City. Known to locals as “Mall” or “G-Mall”, this shopping center features a good number of international and home-grown retail brands that sell everything from clothing and accessories to baby products and electronics. Its department store is a favorite among bargain hunters. There are luxury cinemas, restaurants and large atrium for events and a beautiful rooftop where more dining options are located.
NCCC Mall Davao – a mid-sized shopping center located in Davao City’s southern parts. The mall sits along MacArthur Highway, very close to places for interest like the local fair grounds, Matina Town Square and S&R Shopping Center (not a participant in the Big Davao Fun Sale, unfortunately). NCCC Mall’s department store and supermarket are also favorite haunts of bargain shoppers in the city. The mall also has cinemas, a food court, some fast food chains, restaurants, an event center, gaming arcade and karaoke booths.
Robinson’s Cybergate – a community shopping center occupied by a supermarket and a number of restaurants and specialty stores located outside. The shopping center is located along J.P. Laurel Avenue, close to some hotels, cafes and restaurants. The recently opened Blue Posts Boiling Crab and Shrimps is less than a 5-minute walk from Robinson’s Cybergate. Most of the upper level of the building is occupied by a BPO company. Robinson’s also serves as anchor stores for Abreeza Ayala Mall.
SM City Davao – the largest mall located in the southern part of Davao City. SM City Davao is also the very first SM Supermall in the city. The mall houses a good number of retailers including popular international brands, a department store, supermarket, food court, cinemas, restaurants, spas and wellness centers.
